The second lesson in our series 'The Prophets' taught by Assistant Pastor Dillon Meadway on Sunday, January 11th 2026

This powerful message confronts us with a question that echoes through the ages: How long will we hesitate between two opinions? Drawing from the dramatic showdown at Mount Carmel in 1 Kings 18, we encounter the prophet Elijah challenging an entire nation that had become spiritually numb. The Israelites under King Ahab had achieved worldly success—impressive cities, a standing army, flourishing trade—yet they had compromised their devotion to God by embracing Baal worship. This ancient story mirrors our modern struggle: we live in a culture that will applaud us for blending in, for not being too radical about our faith, for compromising just enough to gain acceptance. The sermon explores how easily we can become like Ahab, building impressive kingdoms by the world's standards while our spiritual lives deteriorate. We're challenged to examine what success truly means and whether we've allowed the noise of culture to drown out the voice of God. The story of Roger Bannister breaking the four-minute mile serves as a powerful metaphor—what seems impossible becomes achievable once someone steps out in faith. Just as Elijah stood alone against 850 false prophets, we're called to stop halting between two opinions and decisively choose whom we will serve. The question isn't whether God can work miracles in our generation, but whether we'll have the courage to stand for truth when compromise seems easier.
